discount format, it is concluded that El Trébol is the second most important
competitor in the industry with a 23.7% share, only surpassed by Cencosud
with 26.3%, while Walmart Chile has 21.1% and SMU with 18.4% of the
stores.
In addition, regarding the number of establishments concentrated in the
study areas, of the 34 that were georeferenced in the commune of Temuco,
it was determined that the Downtown sector encompasses 35.3% of the
sales outlets, that is, it has 12 establishments that are located in that area,
an important fact since it is a territory of low surface area, but characterized
by the high influx of people due to being an administrative, commercial and
cultural point of the commune. Other sectors with a high presence of
commercial establishments are Javiera Carrera and Pueblo Nuevo,
characterized by being residential areas, both with 5 facilities corresponding
to 14.7% of those observed, contrary to Santa Rosa and Santa Elena, where
there is no presence of establishments. For the remaining 4 formats studied,
they were georeferenced in three sectors in the commune of Padre Las
Casas, so that for sector 1 and 2 there is the presence of one establishment
respectively, and for sector 3 there are 2 establishments, one being a
discount format and the other a supermarket.
Following the study, an average expenditure of a food basket (GMCA) of
eight products was analyzed in order to compare the cost of purchasing the
same basket in different supermarket brands, showing that the Walmart
chain has the lowest GMCA of $12,301, followed by Cencosud with an
average expenditure of $12,319 in all its commercial formats, and finally the
Cugat chain with $12,543, so that purchasing the basket of eight products
is more economical in the three aforementioned chains. In contrast, the El
Trébol supermarket has a GMCA of $13,793 and the SMU chains have an
average expenditure of $13,136; therefore, the basket is more expensive
compared to its competitors.
